I don't know if anyone is still monitoring this thread, but it has helped me out
tremendously.
In my case, a security vulnerability in a software update caused denial of service
and loss of sound and it created a conflict with the Microsoft Composite Battery
in System Devices.
I uninstalled the Microsoft Composite Battery which then made my battery and ac power
icons disappear from the systray. Following MartinM's lead, I deleted the Microsoft
AC Adapter and the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery (had two and deleted
both), rebooted and now can see the Microsoft Composite Battery under system devices
again.
However, now I see only the AC Power icon in the systray, even when on battery.
I checked the power options properties and it shows the correct information (on battery
power and percent of power remaining).
If someone sees this and has an answer, that would be great. If I find a fix first,
I'll post it here for the next person who has this problem.
