Microsoft may well be to blame, but it is nevertheless a hardware problem — usb is
simply inferior to ide.
I'd never try to do anything through usb that is as timing sensitive as recording
to optical media. I just wouldn't trust it to work for recording to optical media.
Maybe it would be okay for data storage.
