Thanks, Ricer46. Yes, vetter hardwar can make it better. Yet a better USB driver made just for XP may solve the problem.
Rather than buy a better USB device, he may want to consider an economical hardware work-around. IDE to SATA. Likely his mobo has a good SATA with XP drivers. If so he could check this out:

The vendor says they have model that will support ATAPI Packet command set. Support 48-bit LBA addressing. Support additional ATA command for serial ATA... yada yada. I have not tried it, but maybe I will. I have given up other wise on external drives. They say you can run a SATA cable up to three feet from the interface. What would you say to that?
