An all SATA connection is the best, but it's possible to use a USB connected external 
burner.  I doubt his laptop has a SATA port.  I have a Plumax USB enclosure for a 
DVD burner that works very well.  Unfortunately the one I have is no longer available 
on the internet.

cdfreaks.com has a big external enclosures thread.  That's where I learned about 
the one I have.  I haven't looked at the thread in a couple of years.  It's titled 
strangely enough "The big external enclosures thread". I'm sure many of the posts 
at the beginning are out of date.
