Tested in Vista with  cable came with Reader, same message as before.

Used Canon camera USB cable with reader and was able to read/ access photos on cf 
card used in Canon. 
But system hang frequently.

Used Reader USB cable on Canon camera was able to access photos on the cf card.

So I think the Reader is 'half' DOA.
