Yes, Vista and later do not use boot.ini (for their own boot), and modify the bootsector.

The least dangerous way would probably be to re-install W7 and change the default 
boot to XP, and then remove W7 again...

In Vista you don't use notepad, you use BCEDIT.EXE

W7 is probably the same .
