I haven't installed any software recently. Also, I'm very aggressive at keeping my
running processes to a minimum. Process Manager only shows 17 *processes* and no
applications running on my system when I close my browser.
There's now more to the story...
Also in the past couple of days, something has been deleting my boot.ini and autoexec.bat
files when I re-boot. A Google search strongly indicated the ASK toolbar, and even
IE8, but neither program is installed on my computer.
I installed Process Monitor and I was able to capture Services.exe red-handed as
it deleted boot.ini and autoexect.bat, and attempting to delete two other read-only
files in my root directory!! I did a binary file compare with services.exe from another
computer and there are no differences, which would seem to suggest that services.exe
is not infected. Various and sundry system scans have turned up nothing.
Of course, there's no way to tell yet if this is related to the command file hanging
issue but since I have more to go on with the delete issue, I posted my PM log in
the Sysinternals Process Monitor forum. We'll see what the folks over there come
up with.
