Don't be so sure about what it is and what it isn't until you've some evidence :-) An open mind is always the best route to finding a cure. I've never heard of that key being used in the way you describe though - it certainly isn't necessary and could be the cause. Anyway, what happens if you boot into Safe Mode ? BTW I once got the text off that fast blue screen using my digital camera ! That did help with the diagnosis.
