I found a fix for this problem...open regedit and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\{some huge number here}\SourceList\ ....You should see a couple of values listed, probably the filename ISScript.msi as well as a path...delete these values, and all your Windows Installer problems should disappear...it worked on my XP Pro upgrade over Win2K Pro.

I had two keys with different {long numbers} but both said isscript.msi in the product name field, deleted both and problem solved, I see a little hesitation when I install stuff but at least the damn path dialog box from hell is not popping up.

A better fix for this isscript.msi problem
Thursday, March 21, 2002 at 3:52 pm

Gizzmo, if you notice under the logs for XP, this output a ton of error messages
when you install anything under XP.

For everyone out there, I've found a better way to get rid of this stupid isscript.msi
problem because installing this file doesn't help and Gizzmo's methods produces errors.

& the best part, it's really easy. Using regedit, remove this key and all subkeys,
(you may want to make a backup just in case)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer

(You may have to do this for every user on the machine, but I only needed to do it
for one)
That's it. It removes the stupid isscript problem and doesn't produce any errors
during installation and the programs can still be unstalled afterwards. I've run
my machine without this key for a good month or two without any problems, so try
it out.

And in case anyone want to know how I figured out this key was the problem, I have
installed XP fresh on 5 personal PCs and my computer was the only one putting out
this error message (all the machines had the same software but only slightly different
software). After compairing all the registries, this was the only registry key that
was not on the other 4 machines that were working correctly.

Hope this helps out a few people out there...

Thanks for the tip. I never even bothered to check the error logs, since the error in question is a "silent" error and causes no other problems other than the entry in the log file, which is only slightly better than worthless. At any rate, I (apparently erroneously) assumed that the key in question was there for a reason and didn't want to delete or suggest that anyone else delete a signifigant amount of registry data. I'm assuming (haven't tested your fix yet) that removing the key will get rid of the three Windows Installer windows that flash by when I install *.msi and Installshield-based programs. I'm still rather amazed that M$ doesn't have a fix for this yet. But then, they just got around to fixing the stupid "system has recovered from a serious error" message at every boot that many of my customers are experiencing. Anyway, thanks for the heads up; I'll give it a shot.

I don't have this in my register and I can't install any new apps. All I get is...can't find ISSCRIPT.MSI and I have downloaded it and installed but nothing works...I am ready to throw my computer in the street and then go run over it. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, KJ

I had this same problem and took me a while to fix it as well. Here is what I found. Go to : http://www.arcanadev.com/msi.htm If you are receiving an error message regarding the InstallScript Engine, please download isscript.msi. After downloading, double-click the file to install the engine, then rerun the product setup.

I had to install both the instmsiw.exe file and isscript.msi, once I did that then I had no more problems with it asking for the isccript path. Hope this helps.

When there is a file in c:\ called program this also causes this error remove the file (rename) and try loading again. isn't it great when an operating system is inompatable with its self.

Some people who imagine that they are really cool dudes should put their heads in a bucket of water twice and take it out once. Bulletin boards are about helping people, ungrudgingly and without smartarse comments. We all have somthing to learn and you more than most. If you can't have a nice day try and have a day when you get a bit nicer.

I've tried everything suggested above, but I cannot even install the isscript.msi file. It looks like the install is working, then the progress bar rolls back and the following screen gives me a false message saying everything was installed successfully. Does the same thing when trying to install acrobat reader 6.0.1. it even goes so far as to create the desktop icons during the install process, then everything rolls back, the icons disappear...followed by a screen boasting about a successful installation. I've tried all the registry tricks suggested as well. HELP!

I am having the same problem, and have also tried all the steps above. Have not gone so far as a Win XP clean install, or buying a new CD Rom, but the Registry Key is not listed, and the install of Isscript.msi is rolling back and does not show up in "add/remove programs"

I was able to fix this problem after doing a full system restore of XP. I did not lose any files, but had to reinstall about 75% of my software. It's a bit annoying to reinstall the software, but all of my install issues were finally fixed. Try using the system restore function....but back up you important docs just in case.
