Tahnkyou to various people, and one final question

Hello folks.

Recently, some friends of mine had 4 instances of XP showing up at boot, and after
help I was able to edit their boot.ini file so that it only showed 1 XP, and manually
delete the 3 Windows folders that weren't needed. Their pc is now booting straight
into the good XP, and is working well, touch wood.

So, for the assistance I received with this, and other advice, I would like to say
heartfelt thanks to the following people, before one final question, if I may:

re the boot problems specifically:

Thanks to:
triplate, Steve, Otter

and

thanks to: BHC, borg

Also, specifically re AVs advice:

thanks to: mojo7819, Morbid1, Anne Engellenner/aengellenner, Otter, BHC

...and finally, specifically re defragging programs

thanks to: Special-K, Morbid1, John Burns

Thanks to you all....very much genuinely appreciated.

Now then, one more question:

Might there be any other files on their pc (apart from the windows folders I removed)
where any bits of the not-needed installations of XP might be residing, that I could
also go and remove ? Just wondering.

Thanks again.
Manuel.

You're welcome.

You - or your friends - need to do some research to find out if there are files from previous installations. Open a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd) and type "set" (without quotes). Look at these variables:

ALLUSERSPROFILE=C:\Documents and Settings\All Users
ProgramFiles=C:\Program Files
USERPROFILE=C:\Documents and Settings\Username
First, when I say "delete" move to a new folder in c:, don't delete right now. Explore the root directory of c:, delete any variation of "Program Files" that is not the %ProgramFiles% environment variable. Do the same with %AllUsersProfile% and %UserProfile%, Windows have this habit to create names like "All Users.WINNT", "All Users.COMPUTERNAME" etc. Don't touch the Default User, LocalService or NetworkService or any variation of these names in the "Documents and Settings" folder, but tell us if they are more than one (note that these are hidden folders) e.g. "Default User.BLAHBLAHBLAH".
