System restore

For whatever reason, I am unable to use System Restore. It doesn't matter if I create
a restore point myself, or if the system creates one. When I select System Restore,
it shuts down my computer, restarts it, and then gives me a message that it was unable
to restore for that point in time. I have sufficient memory allocated for this, and
I have checked that System Restore is not disabled. It worked fine about a year ago,
when I needed to use it, but for the past 6-8 months, nada. Any and all suggestions
on how to fix this will be truly appreciated. For the record, I'm using WinXP - SP2.

System Restore is rather unreliable, a lot of Malware Targets it also. I would just
turn it off at this point, and try to keep the computer working the old fashion way.
Not sure it can be fixed without a Reinstall, or Repair Install of
Windows, and those are both a bit extreme to repair something that doesn't
always work right anyway.

Have you ever disabled it to clear out old restore points? You could try that, then
re-enable it.

If all else fails, shut it off and google for a substitute program thats more reliable.
The program is ERUNT, and it freeware.

Thanks to all of you for your valuable input. I will disable the System Restore,
and find a substitute for it. I had already removed previous backups in an attempt
to 'force' the restore, but that didn't help. Thanks again.
