Networking stopped after windows update

1. Today I updated my Windows XP vmware with the windows update, and after I rebooted,
networking stopped working, and ipconfig shows all zeroes, and ipconfig/renew gives
the error:
The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation.
Any idea what could have gone wrong?
2. The other thing I did on this vmware is disk cleanup. As there was very little
space left on this machine, I chose to 'compress old files' when the 'disk cleanup'
gave me this choice. I am not sure if this could be causing the networking problem,
but I am not able to figure out how to undo this 'compress old files' operation.
Anyone knows about it?
Thanks!

Happy New Year
sharing network is not allowed on compressed files. try decompressing the files.
also check for the ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew.
God Bless

Not real knowledgeable about VMWare but are you saying that you updated virtual machine
using Microsoft's virtual machine?
You might need to go to VMWare's site (http://www.vmware.com/products/) and make
sure you have the latest drivers for the product you have installed.
