WinXP is a truly collossal burden for a mere Window98- capable PC to try to bear.

Wail, gnash your teeth, and call upon a Supreme Deity to lessen your pain?
Your PC has now laid down its cross in despair. You must offer it release. Remove
that offending beast of evil named WindowsXP, while a breath of life remains in the
poor PC. Use the Win98 boot disk's Fdisk utility to kill the WinXP partition, and
start over, with the goodness and light of Windows98 leading you forward.
Or something along those lines.

If your pc came with Windows 98 installed, it is most likely not robust enough to
handle XP. I won't even begin on the subject of piracy.

Hello Margaret. Is it an OEM computer? Is there a factory restore option? Otherwise
you would use a regular '98 bootdisk. Can you replace all of the drivers for your
computer?
I don't know what happened to Kiwi. Maye he's been to Saudi Arabia and seen Jesus
somewhere.
BOOTDISK ARCHIVE And ALL DOS COMMANDS
RE-INSTALLING WINDOWS 98
XP-READY?
If your computer is XP compatible run the test above to make sure, then you may like
to buy XP Home at a reasonable price.

I kinda like the way the poster completely skirted the issue of piracy.
