FAT 32 shows 0 - lost windows xp - anyway to recover data?

Last night about 12 pm i was downloading and i left computer on as usual. (i am
posting this from another computer) i woke up about 2 or 3 hours later and when i
turned on computer screen, everything was black. I shut it down manually and rebooted.
Computer cannot find windows xp. my hard drive for some reason when i upgraded
to xp partitioned itself into 2 drives C with only about 7 gig and D with the rest
of the space. this is a 40 gig computer. I go looking around not changing things
or anything just to see what i can see and i find out in MS-DOS that some of my files
are missing. I can only access partition C now and it has windows 98 on it. what
i would like to know is what happened to make computer do this and what can i do,
if anything, to get my D:/ drive back??
the files that are missing are
MSINFO32 INI says 0
COM (cannot read middle part) G-1 LOG says 0
SETTUPERR LOG says 0
please help me if you can thanks in advance

Hi Debra
More info needed - not clear about order of events
What was downloaded just before the black screen?
Upgrade to XP - when was this done - has your computer worked normally since upgrade?
Perhaps you have two Windows operating systems installed??
Run, diskmgmt.msc - What does it show on the hard drive?

it says cannot find the file 'diskmgmt' (or one of its components). Make sure the
path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available

Hi Debra
OK - WXP successfully installed - running normally
This is established? Then -
Problems only arise from changes
So what has happened to cause problems?

that is what i am trying to find out i talked to hp tech and they told me the 2nd
partition crashed and do not know why i was downloading a movie and when i woke
up a couple of hours later monitor black and could not get it to come back up
so rebooted and now it is as if i went out and bought a 7 gig (mind you this is a
40 gig harddrive installed here) computer with nothing at all on it they told me
if i reformatted all the 40 gig will come back and i should have no problems what
i don't understand is why when i had plenty of space left and no bugs, i check everyday,
did this happen and is there another way of recovering that partition without reformatting
and losing my information there??

All computers with their electronic and mechanical parts will fail at some point.
It's a matter of when, not if. Some will go for years and some a matter of days
or weeks. You would need a more professional recovery package to try and sort it
out but you really need the assistance of someone that has experience in working
with failures such as this one. I don't think the forum will be able to help. It's
one of those "need to see it" type of problems that may take tools (hardware and/or
software) to fix. First start with a diagnostics program from the hard drive manufacturer
to check the hard drive for failure and data loss. After that, it can get way more
complicated.

Hi Debra
Disk Management
Did it show both drives Healthy; C: as primary?
So your drive has been partitioned - a sensible idea puts WXP on C: and users files/
Applications files on D?
Your film download - large download - did it complete; fail for lack of space?
Check freespace on your drives - should be enough for your downloads and at least
15-20% left free.
Open My Computer, right click drive, Properties, pie chart.
