I tried to download HP's user guide and this msg came up instead. "Can't find script engine "JScript" for script "E"/HP/Support/HPGuide/UserGuide.js". Now I wonder if I will be able to install the recovery disk. This is strange indeed. If only I could afford to buy another computer and send this one into orbit....

From what I can gather you ar trying to use the HP recovery disk. All you need to
do is insert the disk and boot the laptop. You should get a message to press any
key in the next 20 secs so that it can boot off the CD-ROM otherwise it will boot
off the current OS. If the message does not appear then you will need to change the
order of booting by going into BIOS. This can be done by tapping either F2, F5, F8
or even Delete key, while it is beginning to boot, it depends on your system. You
will get the BIOS screen and there locate and change the booting order. Save and
exit. The computer will now boot off your Recovery disk and reinstall your OS to
the initial state.
Be aware that when you use the disk, it will restore the original OS and wipe out
everything that you currently have installed. Consequently, you will need to reinstall
all your Windows Updates and all the programs that you had installed after you acquired
the laptop. You will also need to save all your data before proceeding with the Recovery
disk.

My computer is not a laptop. No msg comes up to press any key - only the msg re script engine I sent the forum. I realize I have to save and download everything that's necessary but it's a home computer so nothing really important needs to be saved and maybe then I can download Norton that will work. I am defragging right now and it is taking a long time because I had trouble doing it before.

See if running a repair using the steps as outlined
at this site
will solve your problem.
