Windows Pausing Frequently

Recently, Windows XP (Pro) began pausing very frequently. Most often in Firefox,
but also in other applications. It freezes about every 30 seconds, for about 3 seconds
at a time, and mostly while typing or after clicking a link or opening an application.
During this 3 second period, nothing can be clicked or typed. I have run a virus
scan with Norton 2002, a spyware scan with Windows Defender and Ad-Aware (Personal).
I have defragmented and fixed errors with CHKDSK as well.
Can anyone help? This is quite possibly one of the most annoying things imaginable.
I can post a hijack this log if necessary.

This may be the dreaded ctfmon.

My older computer was almost exactly the same. I defragged, scanned for viruses,
did cleanups, reg scans, reg defrags, uninstalled unnecessary programs and had tons
of free space. I also tried to play with the paging file to see if that changed anything.
Nothing changed for me. However, after a reformat it stopped freezing like that.
I don't know why, but if it's annoying you enough, you could try backing up important
data and reformating.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to try the ctfmon thing when I get home today, and
if it doesn't solve the problem I'll probably just do a clean install. My computer
needs one anyway...
