If you don't have Auto updates enabled, you can disable BITS, but you need to enable
it, when you use Windows update site.

That Scum is getting as slick as Teflon..
My Automatic Updates are OFF,and that Service is on Manual.
Probably still not secure enough.

BITS still starts, when needed, when set at manual. I never had to start it or set it to Auto, when I use Windows update site. Print spooler is another one.

Hackers Hijack Windows Updater (BITS) Them malware artists are getting lazy. BITS has been around for years. Why did it take them so long to hijack it? Anyway, who needs BITS when there's WindizUpdate and AutoPatcher?

Maybe they're just getting more desperate, since users are getting wise to their
old tactics.

Btw, you're the one who brought to my attention, some time ago, how it could be used.
Until then, I had it in manual for quite awhile, since I still visited the update
site every mo. Thanks for making me think.

I know I don't need anything that requires background transfers. I've had it disabled
for at least a yr.

Quoted out of context:
"You may require this service for some MSN Explorer, Windows Messenger, Windows Media
Player or future .NET functions."

Probably... and, you do realize that the fact it's auto updater can't be de-selected,
that classifies WMP as spyware.

Anyway it is blocked in my Firewall as well.

I have it blocked, as well, but I now use Comodo. It not only has an app monitor
but a component monitor, as well, so there are more rules to create. I get all these
alerts... annoying, but that's progress. :)

Irrelevant, but...I miss the simplicity of my older version of Kerio, but I finally
had to give it up. It started causing Stop errors for some unknown reason, and I
wasn't about to go through the daunting task of finding out why.

I know that damn thing (WMP-Updater)can't be deselected.
I run the Free Version of Zonealarm and have WMP-Updates blocked there. Am considering
to install the MP ,think it is the VLC-Player.D/L it, just have not installed it
yet. It's the one that was recommended here a couple days ago.

I don't let it bother me. It's just the idea really. I still use it quite a bit, but I also use VLC. I don't listen to internet radio, or anything.
