Windows XP Pro Taskbar Freezing

I have read posts in the forum and in other forums about this and nothing seems to
exactly fit my situation or propose a solution.
I have just set up this computer. It's a Intel Dual Core Quad Extreme, 4G RAM, Dual
Nvidia 8800 GPU in SLI, with four monitors.
When I first boot, I can use the Taskbar and Start up menu for about a minute, then
it freezes completely, and never comes back. If I want to use the menu for another
minute, then I have to reboot.
I have run registry fixes, hijack this, spyware doctor, and antivirus until I am
blue in the face. About the only thing I haven't tried is wiping the boot disk and
reinstalling XP.
Nothing else about Windows Explorer freezes ... just the taskbar and start menu.
I can work on the computer just fine .... as long as I have it set up so that I
do not need the frozen bits. Of course, to shut down, I have to go to the task manager.
I will post a hijack this log if anyone thinks it will help.

You've just set this up - so has the problem been there from first use? If so, probably
a hardware/driver issue (any clues in event log - run eventvwr.msc)?
4 monitors (slight overkill?) - are you using them all - if so, have you tried with
just one, then 2 if ok etc?

No, it didn't happen from the very beginning. I'm not certain if it was happening
from before I set all the monitors up (and yes .... I use them all .... sad, isn't
it?).
I will try setting the monitors up one at a time and see if that makes any difference.
Also, I'll call the folks who made the video card and see if they have any input
on this. (Tomorrow, of course, they are closed today.)

Well, if all else fails, defrag. And .... strangely, the second I started defragging
the disk with Windows XP on it, the taskbar and Start menu stopped freezing up.
Of course, I'm sure it didn't hurt to do scans for spyware, and to give the registry
a good fix.
