Dell desktop, Brothers hl-5040 laser printer connected to lpt1..Get the Print Spooler
error and have tried all I know..Starting/starting spooler, deleting/reinstalling
drivers, deleting all the other printers..

Not that this is direct answer to your plight, but I find the USB connection option
a LOT less troublesome and it seems to work faster, too....

By any chance, was there a Lexmark printer connected to this computer in the past?

The exact error message you are getting from print spooler may help to diagnose the
problem. Also, when do you get the error?
