External hard drive

Configuration
I have an external hard drive which connects to my PC through a USB cable. I have
used it extensively to store pictures and information but suddenly it is no longer
recognised when I plug it in. The green light comes on momentarily then turns to
red.
Any suggestions will be welcomed. Thanks. Mike
How do I get all my programmes to show in two columns when I click on start/programmes?

First step is to figure out whether it's the hard drive, or the computer. Can you
plug it into a different computer, and see if it works there?

These devices appear to be notoriously unreliable. Usually the enclosure is bad,
not the drive.

Right, if he determined that, as between the computer and the drive, it was the "drive,"
the next question would be, OK, what happens if you put the drive in a different
enclosure?" I agree completely that the enclosures fail a lot more often (at least
in my experience) than the drives themselves. And sometimes it's even the cable.

Click on taskbar and start menu in control panel. click on start menu tab, click
on customize for whatever way you are using and then and uncheck "use personalized
menu" in the advanced options.

As Ari suggested, try an alternate cable, if that doesn't work, you'll need to remove
the drive from the enclosure and install it directly to the computer, so much for
the convenience factor.

Hopefully, it's the enclosure rather than the drive. You could try a different enclosure,
or try connecting the drive as a second drive to your existing drive controller card
in the PC (or in another PC).
