WERxxxx.dir00 ???

Hello and thank you for your time. I frequently delete temporary internet files and cookies from my kids accounts by right clicking start and navigating the "tree" deleting temporary internet folders and cookies. I have recently noticed numerous files like this WERxxxx.dir00. To get to them I right click start>(choose an account)>Local Settings>Temp> WERxxxxdir.00. Does anyone know what they are and if they are needed. I try and keep the computer cleaned out as best I can but I don't remember seeing these files before. Also as a side note all my kids accounts (when I run through the "tree") have what I call expand boxes in front of their names. You know the small squares with the + in them. All except one son. I can't access his account. Every time I try it says Access Denied. Any ideas on that one either would be appreciated. Thank you again for the help. Jeff

Jeff, I don't know what are the files you named. However, files in a temp folder
are just that -Temporary. That goes for any temp folder on your computer, except
a few that just may be attached to your current session. So clear 'em away!

Hello again, Thanks for the response. After digging a little bit deeper I think these may be Windows error reporting folders. Some are empty but some have 1 or 2 files in them that look something like this (some application).exe.hdmp (some application).exe.mdmp Some have a text document in the folder marked appcompat. I just dont want to send something away that I might need. Any other help might get you chocolate chip cookies or apple pie. Thanks again. Jeff

You're going about this system cleanup activity in a not-good way.

The mysterious files you're referring to are system dumps, which are created when
Windows crashes. If these files are being created frequently (look at their dates
of creation), then something is messed up with your Windows installation, and you're
going to continue to get crashes and unpredictable behavior.

If you want to delete temporary files and cookies, you can do that using built-in
Windows utilities, rather than going through what you call "the tree" and deleting
anything that looks useless. It's possible that you've created your own problem
by doing that.

To delete temporary files and cookies created by browing, go into Internet Explorer,
and go to Tools/Internet Options, and then press the delete tab.

If you want to get rid of other temporary files, you could go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System
Tools/Disk Cleanup.

If you want to see the files in your son's Documents and Settings, log in as your
son, using his password if he has one.

Thanks again for all the help. When I use the Internet Explorer>tools>delete(cookies-temp. files-history) it only deletes from my account. I would have to log in under each kids name to do each account this way I think. It may seem like "spying" but using the "tree" I can monitor their internet activity by viewing their Temporary Internet files as thumbnails. I have never had any problems but they are teenage boys. Do you think these WER type folders could or should be deleted? The computer is old and we do need to upgrade to a new unit but the funds just aren't there at the moment. Keeping the cookies and Temp files to a minimum seems to be a bandaid fix for now. Thanks again for the help. Jeff

Those files can be useful for diagnosing why your machine is crashing. If you're
not going to use them for that purpose, there's no harm in deleting them.
