New Router; New card

Our router pooped out on us and I had to get a new one. In the process of setting it up, I ran across a comment saying that some older computers may not be compatible with WPA. I remembered that. So, when my wife's computer didn't connect, I figured I needed to get a new card for it, which I did. My concern arose when I got to the part of the set up where it asks about what type of encryption I wanted to choose (TKIP or AES) and what pass phrase I wanted to use. I worried that if I set up a separate WPA for her card, it may not be able to communicate with the Router. My question: Can I skip this part and just tell it to connect?

If you can bypass the Encryption setup(set to none) when you are installing the card that would be the way to go. It's always a good idea to get the computers communicating before enabling the encryption.

I'm not too happy with the instructions given. Not at all. I did skip past the part where I would choose the type of encryption from the new card software, but I did have to put in the password (which they called "pass phrase"). This allowed me to click to the next step. It asked me to click the button on the router. I did that but nothing happened. I tried right-clicking on the wireless connection icon and telling it to repair, but there was a problem resetting the IP address. Is this something the DSL people can help with? They are pretty much hands off when it comes to networks and routers, though. As a last resort, my wife knows someone who knows more about this than I do, and for a small fee might help...

A pass phrase usually is part of the encryption process the pass phrase is converted into a encryption key. You may have to go into the configuration(properties)for the card and set it up manually. What brand is the card?? Open your Network Connections(right click on the network icon in the system tray and select Open Network Connections)then right click on your connection and select Properties and Configure on the window that opens. Good luck!!

The hardware is Lynksys. I finally realized that I should be clicking on the green Linksys icon. The message I get after telling to to connect is "Cannot associate with access point." I pressed the button on the router, but no help, there.
