CD-ROM (CD-RW) only reads/plays audio (music) CDs

I've got a Samsung CD-RW drive (SW-252S) that detects all CD's as audio. Data CD's are displayed as one track audio discs in Explorer. And Device Manager lists the drive misspelled as SAMSUJG C@-R/RW SS-252S. Initally I thought there might be some kind of virus on the machine the drive was in so I put it in another computer (I know is clean) and got the same results. Due to the mispelling and garbage in the device's text id tag I thought the drive's firmware was corrupt. I downloaded the latest firmware and flasher from Samsung. Their flash utility said I had the wrong firmare for the drive specified (thanks to the misspelled device id). However, I was able to flash the drive with mtkflash through DOS. But that didn't help and the drive is still having the same problems. Any info/suggestions greatly appriciated. Thanks.

Congradulations! You have been able to trace a a hardware issue down to the component level. The flash chip is defective. Neither with Windows XP or DOS could you fix it.
Now your choice is to throw the defective CD-drive into a landfill or donate it to a charity.
