Output Audio Problem

Hi, I have a laptop which belonged to a friend, (they bought a new one and i inherited
their old) Any audio (music, video etc) comes through about 20% faster than it should
be (whether it be media player, winamp or internet streaming audio / youtube). It
was like this before i had it but it never bothered my friend. I've tried the troubleshooting
but no help there. All drivers seem to be present and working properly.
Anyone had a similar problem or have any ideas ?
thanks

Do a fresh install of XP. That way all the junk from previous owner is gone and
you start fresh.

Do the singers sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks? Like, high pitch squeaky voices?
If so, there are several different possibilities, and you can read about them if
you google for -- chipmunks audio --. Seriously.
