I do not want to search inside zip files. How do I turn this option off?

I am assuming you are searching for a string inside a file. Follow this page backwards:

I am searching only for files. I do not want to include what is inside ZIP or CAB
files in my search.

Does this program have to be run every time you do a search or does it permanently
change the behavior?

Beats me, try it and find out :-)
Actually, I would expect you would run it once and it would make a change to the
registry.
Before you make any changes to the registry, please back it up. An excellent way
to do this is to install ERUNT.
Let it add an entry to your Start menu during the install process. That will allow
ERUNT to backup your registry each time you boot. It only takes a few seconds and
has no real impact on boot time. Run ERUNT immediately after installing it to create
a full registry backup.
