Sounds more like an ISP issue or your modem then XP. First thing I would do is contact
support at your ISP. New modems these days can be accessed like a router to have
settings tweaked. There are also patches needed for some providers. Could also be
a firewall issue or Norton does strange things like this sometimes.
If the kid you talk to at the helpdesk (First level) can't figure it out..insist
the your call gets escalated to Tier 2 support.

When I first built my daughter's PC it had a similar strange behaviour. It would
work ok browsing, downloading, anything in fact for almost exactly five minutes,
then drop out while the link would appear as active. It took a long time before
I worked out that disabling the network device in Network Connections, then enabling
it again, made it work reliably after that. I would be very interested to know if
your problem can be solved by the same method. Ultimately, I 'fixed' it by writing
a small batch file that ran at startup to disable/enable the device using Devcon.
Hope this helps. Cheers. Spexx.

Hmm. Maybe it's problem with the NIC in both cases. Did you try swapping it out
with a new one? Or if was a built-in did you try a PCI NIC? Update drivers etc..

It's interesting isn't it? The NIC in my case was on the motherboard and ensuring
the latest drivers were installed did not fix it. Installing a trusty old 3com PCI
card fixed the problem, but due to limitations on PCI slots needed for other devices,
I could not use that as the permanent solution. I tried every single trick I know
(and a few I didn't) in my attempt to resolve it, but in the end the workaround I
described was the only viable solution. I seem to remember posting up this solution
before, either here or elsewhere. Cheers. Spexx.

Just a guess but maybe it had something to do with advanced settings of the card
(power saving options) like:
Link Down Power Saving
WakeUp on ARP/PING
WakeUp on Link Change
Seen issues related to these settings before. But I don't don't for sure shot in
the dark.

Absolutely. I tried stuff like batch files on each of the two PCs on the network
to ping each other at regular intervals, plus some obscure registry tweaks with keepalive
polling, all to no avail. It drove me crazy for about three days and I virtually
filled up my Lab-book with notes before I stumbled upon the solution almost by accident
(ok - I admit it - totally by accident). Cheers. Spexx.

Weird, but one to file in the archives. Plenty of things are dicovered by accident..like
penicillin. Not quite on the same level but you get my point lol.
