CHKDSK Stalling - can't bypass scan

In order to troubleshoot another problem I was advised in several articles to run
chkdsk. So I did and it ran at the next start up as expected but then it stalled
on stage 5. The first time it stalled at 68%. I left it running and ran errands all
day and when I got back it was still at 68%. I tried rebooting 2 - 3 times and each
time it stalled at stage 5 around 58 - 68%
when I boot it doesn't give me an option to skip the scan. What should I do? I'm
thinking of trying to hit f8 repeatedly on the next reboot but before I waste my
time does anyone know if booting in safe mode by passes the scan?

I would download the diagnostic tool from your hard drive manufacturer's web page
and run it. Bypassing the problem would not be a good idea if the drive is going
bad.

If you can get beyond the stalled CHKDSK, as well as following Ricer's advice about
the HDD diagnostics:
1. Did you run CHKDSK 'Drive letter:' /f /r ?
2. To stop CHKDSK running every time you boot, until you have sorted out the underlying
problem, run CHKNTFS 'Drive letter:' /x
