Force the device manager to show "mice and other pointing devices"

My USB mouse (kind of) randomly refuses to be recognized and it shows up on screen, but won't move. The problem usually starts when my cat hits the button on the powerstrip or the plug gets pulled from the outlet. How can I force either the control panel / mouse to show something under hardware or force device manager to show "mice and other pointing devices" with something inside it so I can reinstall it? Show hidden devices shows the mouse entry, but there's nothing under it to re-install. My buddy used this mouse for a week and said he had no problems, but the same problem happened with his mouse on my computer after a power outage. All my other usb devices work fine (keyboard, mp3 player, camera, hdd) and this is a fairly new "IBM Kensington mouse*in*a*box scroll". Sometimes after 3 or 4 restarts and unplugging and plugging it back in over and over again it will work, however, if I have to navigate with tab one more time this won't be a problem as I shall be throwing my computer out the window.

So you're cat is killing your mouse...

isn't that to be expected? For starters why don't you protect the plugs so the cat can't get to them. You "re-install" by rebooting, as you have already discovered.

Kill the Cat

Keep you feet off the Power cords.

Obtain a good Surge Suppressor.

Read the documentation for the Mouse.

Learn how to use device Manager.

If it's a USB mouse unplug Usb Plug/ reinsert.

Just plugging the mouse into a different USB port should cause a reinstall.. However, in case you haven't noticed, it takes a minute or so for the mouse to start working again after plugging it into a different USB port, while XP installs the drivers. Swap some USB plugs around and see if the problem persists. Maybe it is a bad jack.

I have had similar problems with USB mice connected to the PS2 port via an adapter - they just seem to be flaky! If this is the case with your setup, try using the mouse plugged into a "proper" USB port. Cats are a problem! Mine will insist upon sitting on the mouse mat, on the keyboard, on top of the (old bulky) monitor while draping their tail in front of the screen etc :-) Consider investing in a UPS - I swear by mine. Cheers. Spexx.
