Battery icon always shows "on ac power"

So I have nearly finished recovery of a Dell laptop from a trojan attack.
The only remaining item I am aware of is that the power icon in the system tray always
says "on ac power" regardless of whether ac is connected or not. It iused to show
a battery when on battery power, now it always shows the power lead - and doesn't
report the state of the battery.
I've tried everything I can find on Google (not a lot !), and there's nothing obviously
wrong in Device Manager. I would delete the appropriate device or driver and let
XP reinstall - but cannot identify which one it is :-(
Any clues for me ?

My best guess would be, under System Devices in Device Manager, "Microsoft Composite
Battery." However, you can't delete this one - just update the driver. You could
try that, and, if that doesn't change anything, do an SFC (system file check) on
the files identified as associated with that driver, which I believe are battc.sys
and compbatt.sys, both in c:\windows\system32\drivers.

Interesting - "Microsoft Composite Battery" not present in Device Manager. Should
it be there, and if so do you know how to get it back ?

What do you have listed under "System Devices" in Device Manager?

Have you tried Pulling the Battery, unplugging the A/C and hitting the Power Switch
a few times, leave it sit un-powered for a while.
Most Likely Power Management in Device Manager. Check PM in Bios. Settings in PM
as well.

re: Battery icon always shows "on ac power" - fixed

Deleted BOTH Microsoft AC adaptor AND Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery
in Device Manager, rebooted, and - lo and behold - Composite Battery reappeared under
"System devices", along with the correct power icon behaviour :-)
I've seen dozens of Google references to this icon misbehaving in laptops and this
is the only fix that has worked. If the driver files themselves are missing, there's
a neat way of getting them back - see the post from DogHair (you couldn't make it
up !) here

Martin,
Not sure I understand all that, but most important you got it fixed.
Would be interesting to see what appears now in Device Manager.
Drivers can do the Damnedest things.

Thanks for your concern - having deleted the two items in Device Manager under "Battery",
and allowed them to be re-discovered and re-installed at re-boot, "Microsoft Composite
Battery" has magically reappeared in Device Manager under "System": it is the intermediary
between the battery and various system functions of which the battery state-of-charge
icon is one.
I can't find any reference to how or why this works, but it seems that "Microsoft
Composite Battery" cannot be installed directly, its a side effect of the other items
being installed. Very strange, and no wonder there are so many Google references
to struggling with it.

Martin,
Probably involved with ACPI Power Panagement and it's Drivers.
Even in Win98 it's difficult to address any PM problems on an individual Basis. Remove/Reboot
seems to be the only Solution.
I did find a Check box for the ICON in Control Panel> Power Options Properties,
Advanced Tab, however, I think this just allows the ICON on/off,. Probably wouldn't
correct incorrect Display of Power state.
ACPI is a complex System, so getting it fixed is an accomplishment.
What would we do without Device Manager?

I don't know if anyone is still monitoring this thread, but it has helped me out
tremendously.
In my case, a security vulnerability in a software update caused denial of service
and loss of sound and it created a conflict with the Microsoft Composite Battery
in System Devices.
I uninstalled the Microsoft Composite Battery which then made my battery and ac power
icons disappear from the systray. Following MartinM's lead, I deleted the Microsoft
AC Adapter and the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery (had two and deleted
both), rebooted and now can see the Microsoft Composite Battery under system devices
again.
However, now I see only the AC Power icon in the systray, even when on battery.
I checked the power options properties and it shows the correct information (on battery
power and percent of power remaining).
If someone sees this and has an answer, that would be great. If I find a fix first,
I'll post it here for the next person who has this problem.

OK, I resolved my issue with the missing battery icon in the systray. I followed
the link MartinM provided above to a post from dOGHAIR on another forum. This post
contained a batch file which repairs the missing icon issue. I have received permission
from dOGHAIR, aka Davey, to post a link to the batch file here.
Thanks, Davey!

I'm having the same problem as the rest of you with my Dell Inspiron e1405 laptop.
The taskbard icon always shows "On AC power" even when unplugged. And when I go
to Power Options my battery is listed as "Not Present", yet the computer keeps running
when unplugged from AC; so the battery must be working. To add further, the battery
will never enter a state of fast charge (constant green light), but is in a perpetual
state of trickle charge (flashes green every 8 seconds) reguardless of the laptop
being on or off.
My Microsoft Composite Battery driver is present in device manager, and I could not
delete it, but I tried Martin's process anyways.
Deleted the Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery
drivers and rebooted. This did not fix it.
So I went for the dOGHAIR fix, installed it, rebooted, but it did not work either.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated.
