Firewalls - the circle game.

Hi,
I have a program that keeps wanting to access the Internet but informs me that it
gets blocked by a firewall. When I go to the Windows Control Panel to try and get
to its firewall I get this message:
"Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is
not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall internet Connection sharing
(ICS) service?"
When I select the OK button I get this message:
"Windows cannat start Firewall/ Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service."
I restart the computer, knowing that it makes no difference, in the off-chance that
all of this was just a glitch. But no.
I also have Norton Antivirus 2008 on board, and perhaps this could be the culprit.
Trying to get meaningful human assistance from Norton is as easy as getting a ride
on the next space shuttle. (Try it and see for yourself.) So can anybody please tell
me how I can get my computer system to open its gates so that a program can get through
to the Net? Thanks

Norton Has it's own Firewall, and disables the built in XP one

Norton pretty much sucks, so I'm as Clueless as you are since I have no recent experience
with it. Found this tutorial on Google though it may help.

That has nothing to do with the topic of this forum. Ask the folks at Symantec.

Thanks for your advice. I have tried those folks and they're impossible to get. Thanks
again.

Steve's advice was best, dump everything that is published by Symantec/Norton.
The Windows firewall is sufficient. I just use the firewall that's built into my
router... that's done me well for about ten years now.

If that site doesn't have the answer, then it is out there somewhere. Google How
to use Norton Firewall, and you should find other Help on the topic. I'm building
My own A-Bomb with the information I found on line.:)

Although this has nothing to do with this forum, I must agree with your joking statement
in general about the information that you've found online. I accidentally stumbled
across a site that explains things not generally known about nuclear devices. I don't
understand how such stuff is allowed.
