Deleting unwanted disabled entries from System Configuration editor

I have maybe a dozen disabled entries in the System Configuration editor that I'd
like to delete, as I never intend to re-enable them. I have had no success finding
where in the Registry (or elsewhere?) the System Configuration editor hides these
disabled entries and would appreciate a pointer, so I can delete them.
Thanks,
David

The easiest, safest way is to use a third party startup mgr., and you can't get much
simpler than Mike Lin's Startup Ctrl. Panel.
For future ref, if you go into the program/s configuration settings to make your
startup prefs, rather than just unchecking in MSCONFIG, that would eliminate them
from the startup list.

It tells you the exact location of each.

I've found this free app useful.

Msconfig lists the full registry path to the key which you can navigate to using
regedit, but what it doesn't tell you is that once you have disabled it, it puts
the entry into another key for storage. The regular key for startups is a "Run" key,
but when msconfig has disabled it you will find the entry in a "Run-" (run minus)
key immediately below the Run key in the regedit listing. Cheers. Spexx.

Thanks. But, actually, I was unable to find these disabled items in the Run- key
(which is where I expected to find them based on my Win9x experiences). So, after
I posted the previous message, I went looking for a smarter Registry searcher than
the one in the Registry, which found the bogus keys, eventually, in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\MSConfig\startupreg. Deleting the bogus keys there seems to have done it, as
they are still missing from MSConfig after a reboot.

They aren't doing any harm, just sitting there - apart from maybe offending your
sense of neatness (I feel that too) - but if you should find later that you did need
one it is easy just to re-enable it . . .
In passing, I find WinPatrol (free download) a very practical way to control what
starts up with XP (and when). MSCONFIG is neither an easy nor an informative tool,
and does not list every start-up process.

Thanks, I'm aware they aren't doing any harm, but I'd rather get rid of them. Found
the Registry key, and will also look at the tools suggested here.
Thanks again, David
