Memory Upgrade 512MB to 1GB Noticeable Improvement?

I've heard that WinXP does very well with 512 MB of main memory.
Would I notice much difference after upgrading to 1 GB? My processor is a rather
slow Intel Celeron 2.6 Ghz.
I have the spare memory slot.
I don't do a lot of multi-tasking other that running Thunderbird and Firefox at the
same time. Occasionally might also run Microsoft Excel or Word.
Thanks.

For what you do with the PC 512 mb is fine. Some performance tests I saw once on
Ram for XP, There was only a 2 percent measurable increase going from 512 to a Gig
of ram. Some Applications will benefit with more Ram, but nothing you listed.

You won't notice the difference.

512 Mb is enough for most uses. Having a lot of applications running at once might
demand more, but XP would cope. If you were doing a lot of audio/visual editing the
system would surely benefit from more. 256 Mb is a minimum for practical purposes,
512 Mb is much better and 1 Gb puts it in the comfort zone. Cheers. Spexx.

Thanks all for the help.
It looks as though this thread saved me from doing an unnecessary upgrade.
Probably better to put the money into my next system.
