I've heard that WinXP does very well with 512 MB of main memory.

Would I notice much difference after upgrading to 1 GB?  My processor is a rather 
slow Intel Celeron 2.6 Ghz.

I have the spare memory slot.

I don't do a lot of multi-tasking other that running Thunderbird and Firefox at the 
same time.  Occasionally might also run Microsoft Excel or Word.

If you were doing a lot of audio/visual editing the system would surely benefit from more. 256 Mb is a minimum for practical purposes, 512 Mb is much better and 1 Gb puts it in the comfort zone.
