Searching Files & Folders

Hi, when I goto Search > Files And Folders, and search for something. It does a search and then later on a crash error comes up saying "send error report" or something like that. I clicked more info. I see explorer.exe or something. How can I fix this? Cause whenever I try search for something it always crashes. I am using Windows XP Professional SP3, thanks.

Right-click on "My Computer"
Go to "Properties"
Select the "Advanced" tab
Click on "Error Reporting"
Disable error reporting
Click apply then ok

Yes but it shouldn't have an error normally, with or without disabling the error reporting. I don't want to disable it. But how can you fix it? That's what I was asking.

Deb, how will disabling error reporting fix the problem?

The search may be crashing due to a problem with the file structure on disk, but that is a pure guess without more information. It would be a good idea to run a disk integrity check on spec. Go to Start - Run - enter "chkdsk /f c:" (without the quotes and assuming your system disk drive letter is c:) then click OK. You will be prompted to run the disk check on next reboot - just enter Y and press Return to confirm. Then reboot the system and the disk check will run, taking some time to complete. It will fix any problems it finds. Hope this helps. Cheers. Spexx.

We are going to need some more information to get to the bottom of this. There may be some entries in the system Event Log which could give some more clues. Go to Start - Run - enter "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and click OK. This will display the Event Viewer. Double-click on the System log and see if there are any errors logged from around the date/time of the problem occurrence. Right click on an entry and choose Properties to get detailed information on it. Post back with the details of any likely-looking entries. Cheers. Spexx.

I think it's this one. Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module msvcr71.dll, version 7.10.3052.4, fault address 0x00010582.

OK. That doesn't say very much but does provide a clue. Go to the Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down the list to find Microsoft .NET Framework. The latest version is 3.5 SP1 and if your installed version is below that, it should be updated now from this download link. Give that a try and then retry the search. Post back with what you find. Cheers. Spexx.

That was my best shot, but we are not finished yet. Sorry for delay - I had many other things to attend to today. Would you re-check the event log please and post up the entry, to confirm you are still getting the same reason for the failure. Thanks. Spexx.

Hmmm... I have heaps of errors in the event long, how can i copy all the errors and show you? Instead of writing one by one down.

Here is an easy way! In Event Viewer, right-click on the System log in the left-hand pane. This presents a small menu. First select Clear All Events, then go and reproduce the error. After that, right-click on the System log again and select Save Log File As ... this will present you with a Save dialog - save the file as a .txt file e.g. systemlog.txt. You can then open the systemlog.txt with Notepad, copy and paste to the forum (remember to preserve spacing when you post). Cheers. Spexx.

Strange, I cleared it and I got no more errors with the X, but the crashing when I search is still happening. But here is a one I found that may have to do since when I search then my taskbar dissappears and comes back after awhile: Event Type: Information Event Source: Winlogon Event Category: None Event ID: 1002 Date: 8/28/2008 Time: 11:57:25 PM User: N/A Computer: SERVER-1 Description: The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
