Make sure dhcp is still set, update, or reinstall Network card driver, or uninstall SP3

Googled it: yes all is ok there. I should explain that I am at present on my laptop using the wireless router that my pc can see/detect but not connect to.

Have you done a system restore back to a day where it was working fine?

No I haven't. What would happen to SP3 if I did that?

You wouldn't have SP3 no more. There is no advantage to having SP3, its just a fully
updated SP2. Either uninstall SP3 via add/remove programs or do a system restore
back to a day it was working fine.

A similar Post yesterday was solved by the Poster by uninstalling SP3. Your problem could probably by solved other ways, but I don't have a guide to do it.

System Restore seems to have gotten the job done. Many thanks guys. What should I do about future updates?

Simple. Tell it to not remind you about SP3 ever again and just accept all other updates. Sorted. I'm not being funny. SP3 has caused untold problems and the regular contributors here are getting a bit jaded with trotting out the same old bit of advice. There are countless threads here about it. Use the search function, read the stuff and weep. Cheers. Spexx.

Sorry, maybe I'm being a bit stupid here but how do I tell it not to tell me about SP3 without turning it off altogether?

When it offers updates, assuming you have not selected fully automatic installation of updates, you can choose a manual installation dialog instead of the automatic installation. Do that and it will first give a list of updates which which you can check/uncheck to install. Any that you uncheck, it will present you with a further dialog to select whether to ask you about them again or not. Do that with SP3 and just say no. You can always get it to offer previously-refused updates again via an option in Control Panel - Automatic Updates. Hope this helps. Cheers. Spexx.
