"No active network devices found" message

This problem occured when my firewall mysterously stopped fuctioning, I tried to
start my firewall but it keeps saying "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed
because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/
Connection Internet Sharing (ICS) Service". After I clicked Yes, it will say "Windows
cannot start Windows Firewall/ Connection Internet Sharing (ICS) Service."
Then on Device Manager, I found out that my network adapters had a small "!" mark
below. I tried to update driver but since network connections are "cut" because the
net adapters were not functioning. The drivers are not functioning because "a previous
instance of the device driver is still in memory (Code 38). Please help me on what
to do.

Darwin,
Reboot should clear the memory. Check Device Manager immediately. If the Situation
is the same, click the + sign to reveal the exact Network Card.
Right click on the Network card, select remove then OK your way out of DM and reboot.
Windows will locate and reinstall the Network card and appropriate Drivers. Once
back at desktop recheck Firewall and Services.
Might be some other help at this link.

I tried rebooting but the symptoms is still the same. I tried uninstalliing but it
keeps showing this error message "Failed to uninstall device. This device might be
required to boot the computer."
Also, these are the 3 devices that had a yellow "!" mark (having conflict according
to the website you showed to me):
*WAN Miniport (IP)
*WAN Miniport (PPTP)
*VIA PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

Darwin,
Sounds like you need more assistance than I can provide. From a google search it
could be a number of things, your Firewall, XPSP3 install, Auto Updates turned on.
Try looking in Event Viewer, sometimes gives clues to the problem. Control Panel>Administrative
Services.
I would wait till someone with more Network experience replies to your Message. This
link will provide specific info on Device Manager in WinXP.
Scroll down till you find it.

Do a system restore back to when everything was working fine.

Problem's over. I used system restore and cheked the event viewer for any changes.
It occurs that a "Software DIstribution System" probably changed the system even
though I don't remember using any of that. Still problem is solved. Thanks BW and
John.
