CD drive not working

After upgrading to iTunes 8, my CD drive (TEAC DW-224E-B) has stopped recognizing cds. The drive is showing up on "My Computer", where it seems to be working properly and is showing up on Device manager, where, there are no errors. Uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes has not helped. iTunes was giving an error message, which said that registry values for importing and burning cds are missing and that iTunes needs to be reinstalled. However, that message went away when I changed the UpperFilters value to GEARAspiWDM (with carriage return). CD drive drivers seem to be working. I also tried booting the computer in safe mode. Once again the drive showed up in My Computer, but failed to recognize cds. Could someone help me fix the problem? Thanks. System info: Fujitsu S6231, Windows XP SP 3.

Drive may have died - they do. Can you boot from a CD (eg, XP install disk) - that
would test if it works ok outside windows. If yes, then almost certainly a windows
config issue. If no, then drive probaly needs replacing.

PS. Have you checked the connecting cables (IDE/SATA) are not loose?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm using a laptop. That should rule out loose connections. I tried running the windows xp installation cd and it didn't work. That should imply that the drive is not working even outside windows. I have an external CD/DVD burner. How can I make iTunes understand that the default drive is no longer E: but F: (external burner)? At present, iTunes keeps trying to access the drive which is not working. Thanks for your help.

Without researching it I don't know how itunes decides what's the default drive.
Suggestions. Disable the internal drive in device manager - try again. If no good,
run disk management (diskmgmt.msc) and change the external drive's letter from F:
to E:. Try again. If no good, try uninstalling itunes and reinstalling it with internal
drive disabled and external drive connected - I'd have thought it should pick it
up then.

"I tried running the windows xp installation cd and it didn't work. That should imply

That depends on what you really did. How did you try to run the XP install disk?
If from the CMD prompt, that is not outside of Windows. Can you boot
with the XP CD?
If the drive is good, then you have one of the most frustrating XP problems on your
hands where the only suggested fix (the filters edit) virtually never works.

I tried the following: I shut down the computer. Put the windows xp cd in the dvd/cd-rw drive and tried to boot the computer. While booting (BIOS ensures that the computer boots the cd drive first) the computer tried to access the cd drive but failed. After a while it gave up. I then disabled the cd drive in device manager and connected the external cd burner. Its showing up as F drive. Then I put the xp install cd in the external burner and tried to boot the computer. This time, the computer kept giving the message: please insert the restore disc and press any key. Each time I kept hitting a key, the same message kept coming back. I am using the restore disc given by fujitsu.

It sounds like your internal drive has "bit the dust." Not all computers support
booting from an external CD, does yours?

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. They helped me immensely. I did what Steve suggested. I disabled the "faulty" drive, connected the external burner, which showed up as F:, used discmgmt.msc to change it to E:, uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and it worked! I still keep wondering whether its a coincidence that the drive stopped working after I installed iTunes 8 or it was iTunes which changed something which conked out my drive. I guess I'll never know.
