ntvdm.exe

My wife ran a virus scan last night using spybot, and turned the computer off after
it was complete. This morning when I go to log on, I receive the error message: "NTVDM.EXE
has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
All of this after a dozen or so DOS windows open up with c:\windows\system32\command.com
or cmd.exe. Can someone please help me fix this. Thanks.

Please clarity which version of spybot did you use? Where did you get it? Did it
finish with a clean report?
There is both a recommended program with the name and also a worm with that name.
So it is a little confusing. The ntvdm.exe is a part of Windows and should not be
removed. But it is used by older DOS programs, so it seems odd that the error would
start up right away after the PC boots.

something is trying to run through virtual dos, and isn't successful. instead of
dos just shutting down, it keeps opening up new windows. look at msconfig in the
startups, in your start button startups, and the event viewer to see what program
is trying to run.

Oh no. Didn't know you were a Brint. My paint program is not working right. That
was to be an arrow in my chest. CK killed me with on of his every correct answers.
I am back to nounal. But I would like to know why my Jasc Paint Pro will no install
correctly on my XP Home. Used to work OK. Maybe I should start a thread on that,
but I don't know what to ask. I do not have the original CD for this old Dell L866r.
So I can not do a fresh install.

Are we off thread?
Jasc is now part of Coral. I never did learn Coral Draw. And I started with version
4! I am a slow learner. So I got JASC and was happy with it. Finally learned it very
gooly!
Here's what is does every time I start it. on the Home XP.

It was spybot - search and destroy 1.6.0.30. It did not finish with a clean report.
I believe that all of the malware, etc were destroyed and then followed up with the
'Immunize" function. Then shut the computer down.

I don't know if this helps, but there are some old versions of PSP that are free
downloads.

I like PhotoFiltre better even though I also use Adobe CS too.

Tahj, I suggest you register and post on Spybot SnD's support forums, since this
happened after using Spybot. They'll also be able to help clear up any malware left
on your system.

Geek, of course you're off topic.. you little hijacker you. How on earth did this
discussion turn to Jasc, anyhow? You're getting more help than the OP. :(

I wouldn't count on all the malware being removed, but Spybot probably cleaned what
it could. So, be sure to post on their forum and explain what happened, and when,
as you did here. I should also note, be sure to check the pinned topics for pre-posting
instr.

We love you Geek, but.... you tacked onto someone else's thread, with a totally
irrelevant... Off topic for this forum... post. That was rude, Geek, and unfair to
the OP.
Since JASC issues are inappropriate for the forum, don't bother posting back results
in a new thread. I mean, we're subject to the rules just like anyone else. :)
