dimmdiately that no icons appeared in the system tray and also I couldnt open any
ex file or open task manager (later attempts showed the icons appeared but only after
5 minutes)>

neither worked. I then tried a repair, that didnt work and finally a full reinstall.

it seems to of wrecked my machine, as such I wanted to ask if it was the restore
program itself that wa sunstable, or the fact I kileld the power when there was no

System restore rarely fixes any significant problem on a PC. It seems to be the
first thing everyone turns to before diagnosing what the problem really is. I've
never used system restore to fix a problem. Others may stand by it, but I have no
use for it.
If you want a reliable back up method, look at Acronis True Image. It can make reliable
images and backups of your hard drive to a recovery partition.
Ofcourse, a "recovery partition" is only as safe as the hard drive. If you want
to really protect your data you need to have it backed up off-site somewhere.

Hyuga,
Check this link for the best Registry Backup and Optimization tools for Win2000/NT/XP.
Both free.
Then you can turn off System Restore and reclaim the Space on your HDD.
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
Just a guess, you picked up some Malware that was affecting your System. System Restore
only made things worse because it only restores System files, not Programs, Data
etc.
Hopefully you Formatted the HDD on Re-install. If not take the time to do Malware
Scans to ensure your system is Clean. Install ERUNT and NTREGOPT.
Disable System Restore.

SR is so unreliable that I just disabled it about 7 years ago, and use one of the
many alternatives that really work. You are better off with registry backuo software
like ERUNT, OR disk imaging software like Symantec Ghost or Acronis True Image.

I've used System Restore successfully many times, but I've also had my share of failures,
though never on my own systems. I "manage" my SR space, deleting all existing restore
points and creating new ones every month or two. Don't know why but that seems to
make it more reliable.
I would never depend on it though. I use Acronis True Image and DriveImage XML
and keep two levels of backup. Even that is not good enough for irreplaceable files
though, those I keep on DVD (pictures, documents, code for my web site, etc.).
