Missing or Corrupt File

I am getting an error message that says: \system32\hal.dll. Please reinstall a copy of the above file. I just reinstalled a copy of Windows XP and I am receiving this error message. Also, I am connected directly to the internet through an ethernet cable and it won't let me connect. Says that it can't find a connection. I have never run into this problem before. Can anyone help?? Thanks.

Bad memory, defective hard drive can also cause this problem.

Wait a second.. Are you getting a missing hal.dll error, or are you having trouble connecting to the internet? Because you certainly aren't having both problems.
