My computer is running XP PRO.
I bought a USB card reader / writer. Plug in the reader, system detected it as drive
F:
When I inserted a compact flash card to read, system message :
F: is not accessible, The request could no be performed because of an I/O device
error.
Please advise where did I go wrong/ something not done, Thank you.

Most likely the card reader is faulty. The fact that it is detected
does not guarantee that it will actually work. Better take it
back for a refund or replacement.
(I presume the card is formatted and is writeable/readable on
other devices.)

These things are really low margin devices, there is likely no testing done at all
to reduce costs. I suspect a fair percentage are DOA.

I had a similar problem some years ago. If is isn't bad, there are some brands of
readers that are incompatible with XP Pro. When I contacted the manufacturer, they
confirmed this. I contacted the seller, and they swapped it out for another brand
that was compatible. It was in a camera package deal that I had purchased and they
just assumed I was using XP Home.. That said, some devices will have a file format
that isn't compatible with Windows either so make sure that isn't an issue too.
What brand and model is the reader?

To : normanw,
Tested with two cards = on Nikon, and Canon
both have photos.
To:Ricer46
Since both XP PRO XP Home detected it, I doubt it is DOA, but will check.
To: C K
Does card readers have file format problem?
Brand and model not shown on reader body
Last thing I want to do check it in Vista Ultimate.
Will come back with result.
Thanks to ALL

Ahh.. That's what I thought. I had the same problem with Canon cards with the card
reader that I was first sent.
The card reader doesn't have the format, the card does, so the reader may work with
a card that was formated by Windows, but not be able to read a card formated by the
camera. The formats aren't always compatible with Windows, even though it is/may
be a FAT format, there are some subtle differences. That's why the card is supposed
to be formatted in the camera not by Windows. At least that's what Canon used to
say. Don't know about the newest cameras. Haven't checked them. I know on mine,
Canon warns that reading is OK but writing to a card formated by the camera can destroy
it's contents and make it impossible for the camera to write to the card, and they
are correct. I've tried it. Pictures I transfered to the card from a computer were
not recognized by the camera and the camera wasn't able to use the card until it
was reformated by the camera.
You should probably check with both Canon and Nikon for any such warnings and do's
or don'ts concerning reading/writing on cards that are to be used for the cameras.
The reader that wasn't compatible was a Dane Electric. They then sent me an "Uno"
flash drive reader/writer that has worked well with XP Pro. It doesn't overcome
the write issue with cards formated in a camera though.
If you take a fresh card that hasn't been in a camera and it isn't recognized, or
can't be formated in Disk Management, then you have a bad reader, or an incompatible
reader with XP Pro IME, if you know for a fact that the cards are OK..

Tested in Vista with cable came with Reader, same message as before.
Used Canon camera USB cable with reader and was able to read/ access photos on cf
card used in Canon.
But system hang frequently.
Used Reader USB cable on Canon camera was able to access photos on the cf card.
So I think the Reader is 'half' DOA.
Thanks to ALL
