Select "Show hidden files and folders". Click on Apply then OK. Right click C:\Windows\Inf\srchasst.inf (not .PNF) then click Install. The required file is also in ../I386 folder on the XP CD. The file you want is C:\Windows\Inf\srchasst.inf. The part it also being on CD was just additional information. When I attempt to install that file I get a message saying that "the file msgr3en.dll which on Windows XP Service Pack 2CD is needed." I rebooted and unfortunately the Search Companion remains the same with the "search the web" configuration. I know I installed Windows Desktop Search and then uninstalled it I installed a bunch of stuff as this is a new pc and it's hard to remember. The good news is that I was able to use the search companion through the start menu and was able to get the preferences work so everything is back to normal. Thanks for your help .
