Search companion problem
Monday, October 6, 2008 at 2:06 pm Posted by Mike

When working in a Folder and clicking on the Search Icon (Magnifying glass) I now
get a web search instead of the search companion which gives me a choice of looking
in files or folders. When I attempt to customize it back to Search Companion I get
the following script error: http://ie.search.msn.com/en-us/srchasst/srchcust.htm.
Can some help me get the search companion back?
Thanks

Try reinstalling the Search Assistant:
Control Panel / Folder Options, View tab.
Select "Show hidden files and folders". Click on Apply then OK.
Right click C:\Windows\Inf\srchasst.inf (not .PNF) then click Install.
The required file is also in ../I386 folder on the XP CD.

Mike, you don't need a CD. The file you want is C:\Windows\Inf\srchasst.inf. The
part it also being on CD was just additional information.

Thanks again Rich but I should have been clearer.
When I attempt to install that file I get a message saying that "the file msgr3en.dll
which on Windows XP Service Pack 2CD is needed." I'm not sure where to find that

Rich, I did find the files in folders near where the srchasst.inf.file was and was
able to complete the install. I rebooted and unfortunately the Search Companion remains
the same with the "search the web" configuration. When I attempt to customize, I
get a runtime error: line 228 Error: object doesn't support this property or method

Mike, does Search work if you click on it from the Start menu or do you get the same
"Search the web".
Did you perhaps install "Windows Search" recently?
Also, try Kelly's Korner,
#229, left side. Directions for use are at the top.

Rich,
I think I did install it recently and that may have screwed things up. I know I installed
Windows Desktop Search and then uninstalled it I installed a bunch of stuff as this
is a new pc and it's hard to remember. The good news is that I was able to use the
search companion through the start menu and was able to get the preferences work
so everything is back to normal. Thanks for your help .
