Can't view website
Monday, October 6, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Posted by Terrance (24 messages posted)

Hello

In my web browser, I can't view websites when I type in, for example, www.google.com.
However, if I type it in by IP address, the home page comes up fine.

I've called my ISP and they're convinced it's a problem with Windows. Norton was
also turned off completely trying to get this to work.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Yes, this is a failure in the DNS system. Go to a command prompt (start -> run -> type 'cmd' -> press ENTER) and then type 'ipconfig /all' and press ENTER. Post back with what your IP address, Gateway address, and DNS address is. I'll try to help you from there.

DNS 64.59.176.15
IP 24.78.240.201
Gateway 24.78.240.1

In regards to the previous question, this is what comes up in the address bar: http://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8

Clinking on links when I load the page by IP doesn't go anywhere.

Thanks

This is the DNS server for Shaw Cable for the area of Saskatoon/Winnipeg/Ontario. Is this your area? The DNS server you listed is the secondary and not the primary server they have listed. I tried to query the DNS server and I get a timeout failure. They may be blocking me from making requests because I am not a shaw cable customer. I'm not sure. Malware can mess with this type of thing and there are a few things to eliminate first. It sounds as if no DNS is working at all on your computer. Go to a command prompt again, and type 'nslookup yahoo.com' It should return with some IP addresses for yahoo.com. Or it will fail. Let me know what you get for IP addresses for yahoo.com or if it fails. I suspect something is blocking your DNS requests on the computer which is most likely going to be your internet security software, if it isn't malware. I don't mean to point fingers, but Norton causes more problems than a barrel of drunk monkies. If I was troubleshooting this problem, I wouldn't even hestitate to completely uninstall that software first, and then I still wouldn't trust that it was gone off my computer. (Because it won't be) Do you have any other firewall software installed? Also, about 90%+ computers that come to me infested with malware have Norton installed on them while it is happily sitting by all lights green. So, I wouldn't trust for a second that the computer isn't infected with malware either. Restart your computer, and press F8 before windows starts to load to get a boot menu. Select the option to Enable boot logging. After you get booted up find the file c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt and open the file in notepad. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the file and then move up slowly until you find the first line from the bottom that looks like this "Service Pack 2 3 15 2007 23:02:29.359" You'll notice that the current date and time that you ran the boot logging should be there. Copy from that line to the bottom of the file and paste it to the forum here. This will allow us to see if you have any rootkits, or what other programs you have with the potential of blocking your internet connection.

use Open DNS for your computer, it is free and 100% safe to use as alternative:
opendns.com
enter the dns servers as your dns servers ( open dns servers)

 208.67.220.220

I should also note that I did try this in safe mode with no luck. I can still ping
and get a response from an IP but not a domain name. In defense, this isn't my computer.
I jumped ship to a Mac last year :)

I'll look at this more closely later.. But, I have a big question.. What happens when you type 'ping yahoo.com' ? Does it say, it can not find host 'yahoo.com' or does it say request timed out? Or do you get replies? And what IP address does it show for yahoo.com if it doesn't give you a "host not found" error? The nslookup you did worked successfully against your DNS servers.

It says "Could not find host"

Wow.. This is a brain twister. I love a challenge like this. Here is what I have deduced from your information: Your DNS settings are correct. NSLOOKUP is able to correctly resolve domain names into IP addresses, so DNS is working correctly. Internet Explorer can view webpages by IP, but not by domain name, so DNS does not work for IE. Ping also can not resolve domain names into IP addresses. This appears to be a case of programs be selectively blocked by an internet security program. However, it leaves a little confusion as to why IE can access webpages via IP address and not by domain name. I do see that you have Norton internet security, and I don't know if I mentioned this but it is the source of endless problems. There isn't another software application that I rate any lower than Norton. My explanation is this, Norton is malfunctioning, and is blocking internet access based on program name. It is allowing IE to partially communicate with the internet, but it is blocking its ability to communicate on port 53 for DNS. The same holds true for ping. I haven't looked close enough at your boot log yet to see if there are any rootkits or anything, but with a quick look I didn't see anything that stood out. My suggestion, at least for now, is to completely remove Norton internet security from your computer and see if this resolves the issue. If it doesn't, please do not reinstall Norton just yet, as it never completely removes itself and we may have to do more. I'm going to look at your boot log further to see if anything else could be blocking the connection, but so far, Norton stands out as the culprit. There is a small chance of a program in your LSP chain that is blocking it also. Download and run a program called LSP fix, and post back with what files are listed in your LSP chain. Also tell me if it reports any problems with the LSP chain. Don't make any changes with the program. http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

I removed Norton by downloading the Norton removal tool...still nothing, even in
Safe Mode.

I ran the LSP and it found 0 problems.

I actually had a more experienced IT guy check it out. He found a virus hidden deep
within that Norton never picked up. Long story short, the virus was killed and the
web browser started working properly again.
