Can't get computer to "sleep" in Windows XP Professional

I can not select 'Stand By' or 'Hibernate' anywhere. I have tried the %windir% shortcut, only to get nowhere. With the heat of the summer, I would rather not leave my computer on all day, but I need it for work, so I come back often. It would be much more convenient for me to not have to turn it on and off.

Thanks in advance.

Most likely you have some process running in the background that's causing the problem.
Begin by looking in the Task Manager, try to determine which processes are not
system processes, and shut those down until you find the culprit.

Do you mean when you click Start > Power Off Computer, you do not get a Standby option?

If so, that may mean that it is disabled in the BIOS...
