Can you provide a list of all possible Windows error messages?

Intended For
Windows Vista
Windows XP
Windows 2003
Windows 2000
Windows Me
Windows 98
Windows 95
This is a very commonly-asked question, but such a thing simply doesn't exist. Windows is not an isolated product with a finite and manageable list of errors. Rather, it's an amalgam of thousands of different components from Microsoft and other manufacturers.

The error messages you'll get depend highly on your version of Windows, the hardware you're using, and the applications you have installed. Consider the nearly limitless combination of these factors, and you'll realize that there can be no such thing as a comprehensive list of error messages.

Instead, concentrate on the particular problem you're experiencing, and try to isolate and solve it:

  • Look through our many Troubleshooting articles.
  • Search the Annoyances.org website for one or more keywords related to your error message.
  • Try our discussion forums (use the links to your left for your version of Windows) and post a new message or search through the existing messages. Someone else has likely already encountered and solved the very problem you're having.
  • Get yourself an Annoyances book and learn the methodology to troubleshooting Windows so that you can more easily tackle any problem you encounter.
