Fix Eudora so that it can send mail on AT&T

In order to use AT&T's new SMTP server (used to send mail), you have to register. For some reason, most AT&T representatives don't know this, and instead will try to talk you into paying $150 for a technical support ticket, at which point you'll learn that AT&T doesn't support Eudora. Follow these instructions to register your account and set up Eudora to use the new server.
  1. To register, open Internet Explorer (the site won't work with Firefox or Mozilla Seamonkey), and use your mouse to drag this link onto the Internet Explorer window. The next few steps (step 2-5) refer to the page that will appear in Internet Explorer.

  2. At the bottom of the first page, click I Agree. If you don't see an I Agree button there, you're either not using Internet Explorer (see above), or your Internet Explorer security settings are too strict (you need to allow ActiveX controls).

  3. Next, click the dot next to YES in Box 1, and then enter your AT&T username and password. For instance, if your AT&T email address is myname@sbcglobal.net, then type myname in the first box and select sbcglobal.net from the list to the immediate right. (Same goes for pacbell.net or whatever else is at the end of your AT&T email address.)

Hint: Your AT&T username and password are the same ones you use to connect to DSL. You can test your username (which is your full AT&T email address) and your password by logging in to AT&T Webmail. You can change your password here. If you don't know your AT&T username or password, or if you run into any snags on this registration site, call the toll free number listed in step 5.

    Note: this process should be used for any email address at @ameritech.net, @att.net, @flash.net, @nvbell.net, @pacbell.net, @prodigy.net, @sbcglobal.net, @snet.net, @swbell.net, or @wans.net.

  4. Click Next when you're done on this page and complete the rest of the steps. If Internet Explorer prompts you to install any software, make sure to decline.

  5. Close Internet Explorer when registration is complete.

IMPORTANT: if the registration process fails, or if you don't know your AT&T username and password, call toll free (877) 722-3755. When you first speak to someone, ask immediately to be connected to Tier 2 support. When you're there, say "I would like to register my pacbell.net (or sbcglobal.net) account so I can use the new SMTP server." If the person to whom you're speaking doesn't know what you're talking about, ask to speak to someone else. Don't hang up the phone until your registration is complete (test it in the next step).

  6. To confirm that registration was successful, log into Yahoo Mail using your AT&T username (again, your full AT&T email address) and your AT&T password. If it won't let you in, you're not registered, and you need to call the toll free number as described in the previous step.

  7. You'll use the next few steps to add your non-AT&T email address to your new Yahoo mail account. If you don't have a non-AT&T email address, skip to step 15.

Once you've logged into Yahoo Mail, click the Options link on the top-right corner of the page.

  8. On the Mail Options page, click the Mail Addresses link in the middle column. If you don't see the Mail Addresses, click the Options link again and select Switch to AT&T Yahoo! Mail Classic, and then try again.

  9. On the Mail Accounts page, click the Add button.

  10. On the Add Account - Step 1 page, type your non-AT&T email address into the Account Name field, and then click the Continue button at the bottom of the page.

  11. On the Add Account - Step 2 page, type your non-AT&T email address into both the Name and Email fields, and then click the Continue button at the bottom of the page.

  12. On the Add Account - Step 3 page, click the Skip this step button at the bottom of the page.

  13. On the Verify Account page, click the Send Verification button at the bottom of the page.

  14. Then, check your mail. In a few moments, you'll get an email from Yahoo! containing a link and a code. Just copy and paste the code back into the page, or click the link in the email. If prompted, type your AT&T password back into the Yahoo! login page for confirmation.

Note: if you have more than one email address with which you send email, repeat steps 9-14 to add them, too.

  15. Open Eudora, and from the Help menu, select About. If you have a version earlier than 7.1.0.9, download the latest version here.

  16. Next, from the Tools menu, select Personalities:

  17. Using the right mouse button, right-click an empty area in the Personalities window, and select New:

  18. On the New Account Wizard page, select Skip directly to advanced account setup and then click Finish.

  19. Fill out the Create New Account form like this:

    • Personality Name: AT&T
    • Real Name: your full AT&T email address - e.g., myname@sbcglobal.net
    • Email Address: your full AT&T email address - e.g., myname@sbcglobal.net
    • User Name: your full AT&T email address - e.g., myname@sbcglobal.net
    • SMTP Server: smtp.att.yahoo.com

    • Turn on the Authentication allowed option
    • Turn off Use relay personality, if defined
    • Turn off Use submission port (587)
    • From the Secure Sockets when Sending list, select Required, Alternate Port
    • Turn off the Check Mail option

  20. Choose the Incoming Mail tab.

Note: Even though you're not receiving any mail with this personality, Eudora requires that you enter this information as well. Otherwise, you'll get the 502 Unimplemented error.

  21. In the Server field, type pop.att.yahoo.com.

  22. From the Secure Sockets when Sending list, select Required, Alternate Port

  23. Click OK when you're done.

  24. Next, from the Tools menu, select Options:

  25. Select the Sending Mail category, and from the SMTP Relay Personality list, select AT&T:

  26. Click OK when you're done. (It's not necessary to change any other settings here.)

  27. Now, from the File menu, select Send Queued Messages. Since this is the first time you'll be sending mail with your new settings, Eudora will ask you for a password. At this point, enter your AT&T DSL password (the same one you used in step 3), check the box below to save your password, and click OK.

  28. Check your Out mailbox to ensure that your messages have been sent.
